New rams are about $250 each. Rebuilt rams are $120-$180 each. A seal kit is $20 and you can rebuild them yourself with the rams still mounted on boat. You will need a professional grade (cast iron) spanner wrench. The ones made from stamped steel will flex and wallow out the top of your ram. Sears sells the Armstrong brand adjustable spanners for about $25. You could also get them from grainger or mcmaster - maybe even ebay or amazon. Check ebay for the seal kit.

Re: 85 horce force hydrolics

if 100 boats had your problem then 99 of them would be fixed by valve body. Since your engine is 85HP the new imported valve bodies should be okay with your boat. They are only like $110 with an exchange credit. However, the original valve body is a superior product. If you have the time and can get it rebuilt then it will be a better performing and longer lasting machine. But, again, 85HP isn't that much back pressure and the new imports should do you fine.

the other 1 in 100 boats would have a rusted out spring in the tilt cylinder bypass valve. The ball bearing is pushed into the hole by gravity. When you hit reverse you pull ball bearing out of hole and create an internal leak.

Your best bet is to fix the valve body and see what happens.

rams should be rebiuit when any of the tops seals appear hardened, cracked, lifting out, or otherwise compromised. The internal seals won't fail as long as you use non detergent motor oil or hydraulic oil. Don't use ATF no matter what the mercury or evinrude mechanics say.

can i rebuild the valve body by myself or is there a place to send it to rebuild it? ive always used hydrolic oil from my local boat shop so hopefully nothing has been messed up. If i rebuild the valve body myself where can i buy a rebuild kit?

there is no VB kit. some people have used briggs carb kits for the tiny seals. there are a few threads about it in iboats. you can buy check valves from dealer for about $50ea. They fit 1983-1987 and most 1988. check ebay for $100 rebuild service. If you don't figure your boat will last more than 5 years then new import might be best bet on 85HP due to ease of repair.

buy the ram rebuild kit off ebay and rebuild your rams. when you have it apart check the tilt piston. make sure each of the little press fit ball bearings is airtight. if any of the little ball bearing valves leak then you should buy a new tilt piston or replace the ram. If you watch ebay carefully, somebody somewhere with NOS will sell tilt pistons for $30-$50 about once every 6-8 months. I have seen people selling NOS rams for $220. I wouldn't pay that though. I would buy a used one for $50 and rebuild it. If your ram is busted and you can't find anything reasonable send me a pm. I have a box of new & rebuilt rams ... there's probably a chrysler or force in there.
