tmy 1986 85hp force is not charging battery. I have manual and tested the regulator and the two green/yellow wires coming from stator to regulator . both are showing good. I pulled the + wire off reg and there is no voltage coming out of it. bad stator? voltage reg? or something else I can check?

Your '86 engine does not have a regulator unless you installed one. They normally hava a rectifier, a little one inch square black thing with four contacts.

You should read 14 to 16 volts DC between the red and black wire on the rectifier. If you are not getting it, check the AC between the two yellow wires they should be somewhere between 16 and 20 VAC.

I had a block and couldn't think of the word rectifier. no voltage coming out of it though. manual didn't give any instructions to check stator wires for voltage. I will do that tomorrow. give me the bottom line? no volts =bad stator, volts =bad rectifier?

Re: 85 hp charging circuit question

If you get 16 to 20 or so volts coming out of the stator, then just go buy a new rectifier. If you take it to Radio Shack, they have one that will work, it just doesn't look exactly the same. It costs about $4 or so.

If you don't get any voltage out of the two yellow wires, you could have a bad stator. In that case, I would ohm it out to be sure before buying a new one.

Re: 85 hp charging circuit question

used analog meter set 25vdc scale. got only slight needle vibration at idle speed. but did see some sparking when my probe touched terminal. tach is working, and resistance between stator wires is 2 ohms. should I go ahead and try the new radio shack rectifier? or pull flywheel and examine stator?

Re: 85 hp charging circuit question

You need to check the stator output before you go pulling the flywheel. To do that, you need to put your meter on the AC scale. If you get a reading, then go buy a rectifier. If you don't get a reading, pull the flywheel.

Re: 85 hp charging circuit question

I put the new rectifier on. was showing 13.2dcv across + -- terminals. but then I thought that could be battery feedback, so I went to battery and it read 13.2.. I then pulled pos cable and measured volts between that and neg cable. showing 13.2 vdc idle and 22.5 at 2000rpm. went out on water for about 2 hours battery holding at 13.2. am I going to be ok or will it burn out the battery? or did I measure wrong?
thanks

Re: 85 hp charging circuit question

The battery acts like a buffer in a rectifier type system to somewhat regulate the enery coming from the alternator. By disconnecting the positive cable, you no longer had that buffering and read the full voltage that the alternator is capable of. When you hook the cable back to the battery, your voltage will go down.

13.2 is a good reading for 2000 but you should be getting @15 V at WOT. In fact, most rectifier circuits give 16+ at wOT.

Have you measured the voltage at the yellow wires on the rectifier when at WOT?
