Hi everyone,

I have been playing with my carbs' adjustments on my 1971 Chrysler 3 cylinder 85 HP outboard. I find that when I adjust them to almost so rich that it will barely idle it runs better above idle (more power, more RPMs, better acceleration). Any ideas what would cause this? Could it be a fuel problem, i.e. not getting enough from a bad fuel pump, or is there something else going on?

Start by doing a compression test.
Then check the Fuel pump for damage.Possible pin hole.
Remove the carbs and check the reeds.
Then all the air screws should be at 1 turn out for initial adjustment.
Top post in this section is a link and sinc by FrankA do that.
Check the intake area for leaks(sucking air)spray some starting fluid around the bases of the carbs and any seams.

Remove the carbs, disassemble and clean them. There is a good chance that you have partially clogged high speed jets, or misadjusted float levels, and/or gunk in the bowls.
