I have a 1984 85 HP. 856X4L.

While changing the impeller, I noticed the large gap between the shaft seal in the pump housing and the actual drve shaft. There is a groove worn on the shaft in the area where the seal rides.
My questions are, how much wear is too much. I have calipers that can measure .001" of an inch, and are there other seals that might be a smaller diameter for such a reason.
Also, is there a standard repair for the shaft.

I could have it ground down, chromed and reground, but I think that would be very expensive.

I have a new seal on the way. I thought I might measure it, and or take it the the NAPA store to see if they can match a seal with a slightly smaller ID.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: 85 HP Drive shaft

That seal ia actually redundant. The impeller actually seals inside the pump. Under the seal is a plastic disc. This disc is a locator to keep the pump body centered when installing the impeller. It is highly likelt that the groove you are seeing is from this. The seal is USUALLY a double lip and you would see two grooves.

However, I would not worry about the shaft. Just reinstall it. It should not leak enough to cause cooling problems.
