85 hp evinrude ignition problem

Hope someone can help!!!!! When I try to start it, sometimes it will start, sometimes it wont. When it doesn't, it will try to fire when I let off of the key. Then it will start again after I keep trying.

Sounds like the switch needs replacing.

Could it be the amplifier, because it will turn over but it wont crank, then it will decide it wants to fie and it will crank again.

Turning over and cranking are the same thing, so you are saying it will turn over but won't fire but when you release the key it will suddenly start? Sounds like it could be a contact problem in the switch. Do you have a wiring diagram for the motor and have you tried testing the switch?
