Hello everyone,

Last week I purchased an 1989 Bayliner Capri with an 85 HP force Chrysler engine L drive. I took it to the lake and the boat was only running about 20 MPH. All of the sudden, it picked up some speed and was running normally. After 1 hour of use the engine started missing and it shut off and left me stranded in the middle of the lake. I open the engine compartment and it was extremely hot. I took it home and attempted to start but it won't start anymore. I checked and there is spark on all three cylinders. There is an excessive amount of gas comming out on cylider #3 when the engine cranks. Both 1 & 2 are dry. Any suggestions?

I'm no expert by any means but you might want to check the floats in the carbs. Sounds like maybe they might be sticking. I'm sure somebody will be along with some advice that will help you out.

Before spending any time or money, do a compression test.

Also, what caused the hot condition? Water pump failure or lean running carb and cylinder?

Thank you for the advice, I will check all these things before doing anything else :)

I bought a cheap compression tester today to check the comprssion on my 85 HP force chrysler engine I/O "L" drive. First I checked the bottom cylender and the compression result was 130, the middle one was 40 and the top was 40. Does this mean I have a blown head gasket? :mad

Hopefully you have a blown head gasket.
It is quite common for an overheated Force to blow the head gasket.

But the damage could be much worse.
Only way to know is to remove the head.
Closely examine the cylinder walls, pistons, and rings for damage.

So, what caused the overheat situation? Most likely a water pump impeller failure.

Re: 85 HP force Chrysler Inboard/outboard start up problems

I did what Roscoe recommended and removed the heads and found a blown head gasket between top two cylinders. I can see a some damage on the top piston but it doesn't appear to have damaged the cylinder walls in any way.

The only way to see if there is any further damage is to remove the top cylinder piston for further inspection and replace the damage cylinder. It appears to be a difficult job to remove all the intake and carburators. Can someone please send me some instructions on how to do this? I will really appreciate it.

You need to address the reason for the overheating also. You wouldn't want to replace that piston and head gasket only to have it fail again.

Don't know much about the differences in l-drive and outboard but removing the carbs and adapter plate and reeds is not a big deal, just keep pictures and bag all parts, the pain is removing the rod end cap and pulling the piston without losing any of the needle bearings. it can be done though (I am speaking from experience on a force outboard though)
