85 hp merc no power in gear

my engine runs fine in neutral.put it in gear and it dies out.any ideas.it is a 78 or 79 thunderbolt.i was told the exhaust plate or plates were bad? compression is good in all cylinders and i see no water leaking anywhere.egine sat for a couple of years.had the carb cleaned and float and seal replaced.help please!

All the engines that I have ever seen with this problem, always end up being a fuel related problem, even though the carbs and what not were just cleaned and what not. <br /><br />I would say that the carbs are still not either clean, or set right.

has it been like this since getting it out of storage? Was this your motor before sitting a few years, if so was it running fine when you stored it? did you get a reason why it would be leaking exhaust plate i.e. steam cleaned plug etc.<br /><br /> The reason I ask this is, I ended up with a motor that had been sitting for 5 or more years and had similar problems. mine ended up being ignition.
