ran fine on muffs for preseason start took to lake for cruise ran good. checked my plugs decided to change them, they just didn't look right. Now it over heats on the muffs could this be because the plugs are running better. oh yeah is runs better with the new plugs

When running on muffs, was there water coming out of the exhaust snout? If not, then you need to make sure the muffs and garden hose are connected and placed properly. If muffs and water connections are correct, then it is time to check the impeller. How long does it take before the overheat buzzer activates? If it's less than a minute, there's obviously no cooling water going through the head. What year is your 85HP?

Opps it is an 87. it took about 3min to sound the buzzer just ordered an impeller kit and thermostat. the muffs are in the same place as they were the day it ran on them directly over the intake.

So is there water coming out of the exhaust snout when running on muffs? If so, does the water tend to increase in volume when you rev it up a bit? If not the impeller needs to be replaced.

Yes sounds like its time for a impellor replacement. But also make sure all the water passages are clean and free as well when you have it down to change the impellor. JMHO!

The Autolite are ok.
Are they the surface gap plug?
The whizzer. I install a small diameter.
1/8th is good. anything will work.
