motor i believe is early 70s..

i just bought the motor.. i have a problem with spark (very weak and no spark), coil is getting very hot and believe it is filled with oil as it says on the coil itself and also says that it needs a external diode or resistor ..dont remember which... It gets hot and on top of the coil its kinda bubbling (sizzling) around the top cover. i see a white rectangular diode looking piece with two male connectors right beside the coil but its not hooked up to anything. coil has two wires which are hooked up directly to the wiring block on top of it, but i need to trace where exactly its connected too. belive the weak and no spark problem is related to this coil!?

how is it supposed to be wired??

and another question is ..would a universal car coil be used as a replacement.. and would that need a external diode/resistor?

Replace the coil, bubles are not a good thing....

I used a universal car coil and it worked great (my old 67 Johnson). Make sure to buy a plain one, not a high power one, you might fry your points, etc.

thanks for the reply.. how do I hook it up? do we hook it up inline with that white rectangular resistor beside it or direct?!

a regular coil, maybe a bosch brand?

Re: 85 hp spark problem / coil

I used a generic brand from Advanced. To be honest, I can't remember what brand it was. Depending on the engine you have, the coil should have some symbols on it to let you know where the wires go. The new one will have a neg and pos symbol to guide you. The pos should come from the solenoid and the neg a ground.

Once you figure out what wires are pos and neg from your old coil, just copy that over to the new one. NOt much to it.

I am not sure what that white rectangular thing is??? Mine did not have one. Good Luck.

Post the model number, we can tell you what year model you have.
So you can get the right part.
And test other components to determine the cause.
So you'll only have to replace it once.
Not to mention which, a fire on the boat can really ruin a good fishing trip.

Re: 85 hp spark problem / coil

i bought a accel universal coil over my lunch break. its oil filled like the one on the motor currently and got + and - terminal.

i do not have the model# handy but will post it later. What other components do I need to test and how?

I noticed that the 2 wires going to the wire, were not crimped good, half the wires are loose on each connector.

Re: 85 hp spark problem / coil

Does NEW the coil say "Use With External Resistor" or "No External Resistor Required" stamped on it somewhere? If it doesn't say either way I'd take it back to the shop where you bought it and ask about the resistor.

Also, is it a 6 or 12 volt coil?

If Use With External then you ned to use the ceramic thing you described with the 2 male leads.

If the coil says No external Resistor required then just wire it to the block like the old one was.

Do you have a condenser connected on the NEGATIVE side of the coil?

Hi its a 12volt .. Accel # ACC-8140C (chrome )- It did not come with a ballast resistor but that thing beside the coil on the motor Im talking bout is not being used.. I can hook it up to that if required.. So how I hook the Accel up!?

I have asked the guy at the parts-store counter if a resistor is required, he said no, just wire it directly. But he doesnt know that I was going to use it for an outboard.

Re: 85 hp spark problem / coil

from junction block where old coil connected to one side of resistor

other side of resistor to Plus (+) side of coil

Minus (-) side of coil should go up to points and also a condenser should be hooked up to - as well.

Sounds like you were converted to Battery Ignition , my old 71 johnson 60 HP has been converted that way also.

I just replaced my coil, condenser and I still have what looks like to me a weak spark. so the new coil may not help.

Re: 85 hp spark problem / coil

if you're sure no external resistor is required then just wire it right up to the junction block like the old one was.

the coil I bought from advance-auto has NO EXTERNAL RESISTOR REQUIRED stamped right on the coil.

Re: 85 hp spark problem / coil

Without the "Model Number", we have no idea what engine you have, but if it incorporates an automotive type coil, it is not a engine manufactured in the 1970's.

First chance you get, let us know what the model number is so that there's no lack of communication.

What if it was converted to Battery Ignition, Joe R.?

My old 71 johnson was.

casi77,

On my old Johnson (looking from the back of the boat)

On the left hand side where the motor mounts to the boat, I have a little plate that shows the Model # and Serial #, take a look around that area.

Also while I get this.. what was causing the coil to get so hot and bubble ?? it got so hot i couldnt touch it.. was it because loose connection or was an old one?

Carl, it's a bit risky to recommend a fix that worked for you without disclosing that your motor has been modified.
