Hi i have a 1989 force 85hp. I recently bought a power trim and tilt on ebay, the unit come with the three screws that attached the trim motor. I have attached a picture for reference. I try to get the screws from hard ware storre but the werid thing is that, 5/16 size is too big and 1/4 size screw is too small. Can anyone tell me what size screw to get? trim.jpg

thanks

That reservoir and mounting bracket should use a 5/16 X 18 bolt. If you have never had a trim unit on the engine, the transom clamps may be painted inside the existing holes. Try running a tap through them.

And, BTW: It is easier to mount if you put a stud in the transom clamp for the top bolt. Way easier to get a nut on than to run in a bolt. In either case, soo if you can borrow a 1/2 inch distributor wrench. It has a special bend in it that makes it WAY easier to tighten that top bolt or nut if the engine is mounted on the boat.

I thread the the bottom holes all the way through and run 5/16-18 SS socket head bolts through the transom clamp from the backside. The space for a wrench inside pump bracket is very small. This way you just hold the nut still and turn the bolt into it. All you need the wrench for is the last 1/4 turn. If you have access to a place like fastenall or grainger you could even get SS socket head set bolts for a flush fit on the backside.
