I've got a 1975 85hp evinrude that won't start on it's own. I take the plugs out and squirt some gas in each cyl and it will run for a few seconds then quit. I pulled the fuel line off the pump and turn it over, nothing comes out. Also turns over very hard sometimes don't know if this could be related or not. What's the next step to test? Thanks for your input.

Do you have the fuel primer bulb (and hose) hook up properly (arrow facing engine?).

Do you pump the fuel primer bulb up until it's hard as required?

With the hose that runs from the fuel pump to the carburetor disconnected, fuel should come out of it when the primer bulb is pumped. Does it?

Yes it does.

Sounds like your carbs are in need of a good scrubbing. You have gas to them but not out of them. Take them off and soak them overnight in a good carb cleaner. Run a very small wire in all the jets, pickup tubes, and any holes you can find. Blow it out with some carb cleaner followed by compressed air. Sounds formidable but it really is pretty easy to do.

You can see if the carbs have any fuel in them after you prime the fuel hose bulb, prior to starting. Remove a bowl drain screw and see if any fuel comes out-it should pour out. That indicates the carbs have fuel, but does not indicate whether the internal jets are plugged with dried fuel gel or other debris. Possibly a problem with the float needle and seat.

I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs last year, I could have missed something though I suppose. I'll check them for fuel today. Thanks.

Make sure that you set the floats level with the carb body when turned upside down. Also the indentation in the float goes on top at this point. I have seen them put in upside down and get stuck which will not let fuel in.
