Just finished this motor (new rings - honed bore), carb rebuild, new coil and new impeller and head gasket. The head was super clean and the area inside the exhaust cover also. Seems to run well in my test tank but I believe it's overheating. I sprinkled water on the head and it sizzled. It is putting out water mixed with exhaust at the four holes on the lower leg. The pump itself looked almost new and I also replaced the rubber grommet at the top of the water pump. Any suggestions? thanks

I have the shop manual for that motor and the outside temperature of the cylinder should be 163 degrees fahrenheit and the center of the head should be slightly hotter.

Re: 85 Johnson 2 hp overheating

I have a feeling it's a lot hotter than 163. Water sizzles on the surface and the paint is starting to discolor. I have a 71 2 hp also and it doesn't run nearly as hot (started it up the other day for comparison). As for the pee hole; I'm not quite sure where I could mount one. Has anyone else done it that you know of? Thanks for the input. I did drop the lower unit and again I didn't find anything that looked out of order in the pumping department. I'm still at a loss as to why it's overheating.
