So this has happened quite a few times but today I have had it. As I stated, its an 85 and when I loaded the boat from the ramp the motor would not go up. The TT motor makes noise but doesnt move. After alternating between pressing tilt up and down for like 20 minutes, the cylinder finally moved enough for me to pull away from the ramp (embarassing ). Then I realized the transom saver wouldnt fit so I had to raise it some more. Worked fine until I went to lower it. It wouldnt go down. Not even gravity would help me. Fluid level seems fine. I checked it at the ramp. An hour later, I drove home (half-secured) and when I got here, pressed the down button and it worked ! What do I need to look at? Called a local guy who said and I quote, " They just do that sometimes". Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. P.S. Most of the problems occur going DOWN (95%). Rarely does it happed going up but it has occured 2-3 times. Thanks, Mike

Re: 85 Johnson Tilt and Trim

I have a 1988 70. Sounds like leaking fluid--mine does that and I have to fill it all the time. Might check the small tube at he base to be sure it's clear. Do you know how to release it with the screw on the side so you can put it up and donw manually? Fill with ATF and the easiest way is to ude the same cap you use on gear oil for your lower unit.
Maybe your pump motor is running but not working any more. They are a pain $$$ to fix b/c you have to pull the whole motor just to get to one screw!
