Im working on a 72 85 evinrude starflite.model#85393m.
1 question does thelower unit just unbolt or is there a shiftshaft that goes all the way up to under the flywheel?and also what impeller do i need??
2 im having problems keeping the fuel bulb to stay pumbed up.with the water pump out,im only running it for a few seconds at a time.
This motor was sitting up for 4 years seems all is good so far.thanks for the help Ron

Re: 85 ???lower,fuel

Your motor is not a '72, it's a '73. It has power shift (not electric). The shift rod disconnect is below the lower carburetor. Look under there and you sill see a double horizontal lever set that move the shift rod up and down when you shift. Loosen the center pivot bolt in the double arms and spread them apart enough to release the verticle shift rod.

Don't buy an impeller until you get in there and see which water pump you have. If it has an aluminum housing, order a complete water pump kit from a dealer. It will have the newer and much better plastic housing with stainless steel liners. However if it has already been updated, all you need is a new impleller.
