85 merc water problems

i have an 85 merc that wont pump water through the motor. I have put two water pumps in it and had the powerhead rebuilt. i can hook up a flusher and water wont come out the weep hole running or not, but i can blow through the hose and here the air inside the motor. i was told a 73 model doesnt have a thermastat, i didnt find one rebuilding it. I am stumped. can some one help me with this situation please

It is an 85 hp 1973 model. Thanks for the reply but i finally figured it out. My water pipe had rusted apart at the top end. I manufactured new pipe out of copper tubing and it is working great.
