85 mercury,rev gear

hello.i am new to boating.this forum is great,lots of helpfull intel.i have problem with 850 merc(1975)i recently purchaced with knowlege it has no reverse.i did adjust shift cable,checked control box/unit(ok).and still no reverse gear.i was told that boat had 50hp motor on it before.are 85hp and 50 hp shift cables the same?or there is other thing that could cause no gear?(i do not know if LU was replaced).any help and info would b great deal.tnx in advance
2.neutral
3.reverse no throtlle(no gear eather)
4.reverse full throttle(no gear thou)
1.forward(gear engaged and working)

i didint mentioned that gear shift arm in engine compartment has 3/4" to 1: free play with cable detatched.i just drained lower unit oil and surprice!!!no water,but oil or what ever it is is yellow!!???is that normal.person i got boat from said he put quicksilver.bottle was still in the boat and fluid in it is dark greenish,blueish.help please!
