:cool:I have replaced the the switch but being the moron I am, I can't seem to remember how to put the wires back where they go. I have a purple, orange, yellow and black wire. The switch has A M M B S On the back. I can get it wired to start but when I turn it to the off position it wont shut down. I have to choke the carb. so does anyone know where the wires go on the back of that ignition switch? Thanks in advance for the help. And sorry for not paying attention. I have learned my lesson

And here is a portion of the ignition switch circuit from the service manual

The Red/Purple wire shown off the "I" Terminal goes to pin #6 of the plug back at the engine.

The Purple wire on the "B" Terminal should go to the +12 volt source to all the gauges and originates from pin #5 of the plug at the engine. I am pretty sure when the key goes to "off" the +12 volts is eliminated from this terminal and that is what shuts everything down. So, this one is obviously wrong.

The red/yellow one is the one that get's the "start" signal when you turn the key all the way and ends up going to the solenoid for the starter. So, if you can crank your engine, I think you have this one in the correct spot.

Re: 85' Sea Ray Engine wont shut down

My 85 sea ray has a 5.7L with a omc stringer out drive. Do you happen to have the drawings for that? That would be very helpful. The back of my ignition does not have The "I" It only has A = Accessory B = Battery S = Starter and then 2 "M's" and I am not sure what those are for. If I hook the Orange to "B" The Black to "S" and the yellow to "A" it will start and run but wont shut off. If i connect the purple to any of those posts when the switch is in the off position and the engine is running it will not shut off. I have tested the Ignition switch and it seems to be fine. I am sure I have a wire crossed but it is 100 degrees and there is no shade so I am sure I have got confused somehow. then frustration sets in and I forgot where I was when I start moving wires around :)
