I have an 85 Searay Seville Cuddy cabin 140 mercruiser I/O
I looking at replacing the transom, pulled the engine and outdrive today and it looks like the transom is in 3 pieces..midle part where the engine and outdrive hangs and sides ...totally separate pieces of wood not conected to each other ..I want to replace the middle part only......outside fiberglass skin is about 1/4 inch tick and so is the inside skin ,looks like 2 sheets of 3/4 ply inside ....total thicknes about 2"..i plan on cutting the inside skin to get the middle section of the transom only leaving the rest ....remove the wood from the middle section grind the inside of the outer skin ..replace the wood ....resin , epoxy and all that ....and reglass the middle section overlaping the old inner skin for strenght to get the 2" thinckness when im done...it is really hard to explain what and how im trying to so it without pictures but my main concern is the strength after im done ..right now the inner skin of the transom is one piece 1/4 glass ...it is 1/2 " in between the the wood sections where both skins meet .......will it be strong enough if just replace the middle section ....and just overlap the inner skin with glass or do i have to go all the way across the transom with fiberglass.....im hoping overlaping will be enough
Raplacing whole transom is out of the question besides ...side pieces of the transom only provide support for the swim platform and ladder and i just did the floor and stringers about 2 years ago and i would have to partially cut them out to get to the side sections of the transom .......

any input would be really appreciated ........

thanks in advance

ok here is my plan

wood section will be cut out ...inside of the outer skin cleaned up and sanded ..i will lay 8oz mat on the inside of the outer skin than 2 sheets of 3/4 ply covered in 4oz fiberglass cloth followed by 8oz mat again overlaping the entire section by about 3 inches

Ayuh,... It'll work,...
You're cuttin' out the inner skin, then building back inward correct,..??
Are you reusing the Inner skin piece,..??

You need 2" overall thickness, flat,+ parallel where the outdrive mounts...

Correct ..im cutting inner skin and building inwards....i dont think i will reuse the inner skin it is just a rough 1/4 thick mat dosnt have a nice finish on the outside anyway so i think i will just build it up with new mat and once it is all done i will paint the whole transom and the bilge area ....
what is the limit on the thicknes of the transom ..it was 2" ..and i will try to make it 2" again but what if it is little more ? 2 and 1/8 or 1/4 for example? is it acceptable?

Ayuh,... 2" is the #,... Any less,+ the outdrive's shaft binds against the motor...
Any More,+ there's less of the shaft in the motor....
Neither is a Good thing...

I believe the outer limit is 2, 1/4"...

Doin' what you're doin',... 2" even should be easy...

doman,
Bond-o is correct on all points.
If you want to see other threads with a three piece transom, check out lowkee's thread and even my own, we also have three piece transoms.
Good luck
Bob
