hello, i am new to the forum, spent the last few days searching around for my problem, but haven't found anything. I just picked up an 85 sea ray Seville for a song and a long drive. Once i got home and started inspecting, i found dry rot on the front motor mount. it has the 3.0 mercruiser. From reading many posts, i have an idea what i need to do. I have pulled the motor. and now have lots of work space. I am going to cut the glass on either side and take out the rotted wood. i will then decide how far to each side i need to go. I dont plan on pulling the floor, as it is very sturdy. Anyone here do this job? I would take pics, but it's raining.

first off......welcome to i boats....

"has anyone done this job"....answer = all of us !
see erik greens "unintentional stringer job.

you however will end up doing the whole boat....if the mounts on a ray are gone...so are the stringers.

search core sample and test the transom

ill be back later.

Welcome. I hope you don't have to replace the stringers and transom as well, but you better check em out real good. My mounts were shot too, and I ended up replacing the transom, mounts, bilge and deck. If your deck is as solid as you say, maybe that's some indication that your stringers are in decent shape as well. But Oops knows a heck of a lot better than me. Good luck.

the transom seems solid, but i will inspect it. along with the stringers, but if they are still decent, I will wait untill next spring, or the winter, to pull the floor.
it's going to rain and snow, so no work for today.

welcome to iboats, if glassed over well things can seem solid but the cores can be rotten. I'm doing an 87 searay seville 3.0 liter, floor seemedd solid up front but the stringers had rot to the bow of the boat. good luck with your project and definitly post pics when you have a chance.......tink

I have taken pic's, but will post them later. I have removed the old mount, and checked the stringer for rot. They are wet, but is still solid, the foam is also wet. Is there anything i can do to get it to dry out? Or am i looking at a project to start in the fall?

built a new mount with a treated 4x4. glassed it all in with 1 sheet of mat, and one sheet of fabric. it looks good too. i'll take more pics tomorrow in the daylight, and post them soon, it's a pain in the *** to load the pic's onto this slow computer, then upload them to a site.

I don't think wood treated with any kind of preservative is wise when using polyester resin. It is best to use pine or spruce. But I guess it's too late for that now. If your foam is waterlogged, your boat is rotten and heavy as sin. You are looking at a major job. You will need to do at least the floor and stringers and replace the foam.

I'll keep an eye on it over the season, the motor is back in now, and everything looks nice.
i'll have it out for a trial run once i can get the motor aligned. hopefully before the weekend is over.
