85 volvo penta 270 won't stay down in gear

what would cause an outdrive to lift up while in gear? trimmed all the way down with the dash light on you can pick up on the outdrive. I'm puzzled, didn't hit anything that i know of, and it wasn't like that before we winterized it. goes into gear and prop spins in both directions, but kicks up and the boat is unusable in its current state. as always thanks for the help.

You have problems with the lock down mechanism. Worn, rounded over pawls that latch onto the cross pin is a common problem. missing or broken springs will also do it.

No, it can be repaired while on the boat.

That lock down system has brought many to tears...Not me, but many others.

Has it ever worked? Or did you recently purchase the boat?

In order to fix it, you need to get a good understanding of how it works. It contains many variables and if one part is not working, you get the situation you're in now.

A manual would help...

its my brothers boat, has always worked great til now. we swap boats a lot, so needless to say we were both surprised not to see it working when we pulled it out of storage this spring. ill check the link, thanks so much for posting it. matt
