I give up guys... I just got this old motor and ordered a manual but haven't gotten it yet. the PO said the impeller was just replaced but I wanna put a new one in anyway. Problem is I can't see where to disconnect the shift rod to drop the lower unit. Everything else is loose and the leg will separate slightly. Any takers?

Look under the lower carb and you'll see a lever going across to the shift rod. There should be a nut on that lever. Loosen that and the lever should separate. That will release the upper shift rod from the upper shift linkage. Don't loose the small nylon bushing inside of it. I think it takes a 9/16" socket to loosen the lever.

it's not there boobie. from what i have read the shift rod is threaded into a machined adapter at the top but i can't figure out how to get anything (like pliers) onto the shift rod to unscrew it

Starboard side of the motor.-----You will see 2 arms going to the shift rod !!-----You take out the bolt with a 5/8" wrench .-You seperate those 2 arms and it pulls out the pin.

Now THAT makes sense. that is exactly what it looks like, I just didn't realize that those two arms would separate. I got tired and cold tonight, I will try it first thing in the AM. thanks a bunch

Working from the factory exploded parts diagrams is helpful: epc.brp.com
