I have no idea what that RED wire is that you speak of, but the GRAY wire, if it's the GRAY wire leading from the factory engine/instrument cable, is the sensor lead that would normally be connected to a tachometer sensor terminal.

If no tach exists, the GRAY wire would be connected to nothing other that a connecter that would normally be connected to a tach!

The GRAY wire at the engine is connected to the terminal strip at the engine which has a YELLOW/GRAY wire attached, which is turn is attached to the Rectifier and the Stator.

If that RED wire has voltage applied to it, and the GRAY wire is still attached to the engine terminal strip as it should be, that will destroy the charging rectifier.

I'd strongly suggest that you obtain a service manual for that engine so as to avoid a expensive mistake.

thanks for the reply...the red wire in the box is the positive lead from engine(battery+) to ignitionswitch...then we know why he gets a dead battery.....the former owner has done some "clever"work... :p ii will try to get hold of a elektric scedual...ups..bad spelling... thank you.
