Hello once again. My 1971/72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard Engine used 3/4 of a 5 Gallon tank to travel 2 Miles at midrange speed. The engine is not smoking and the gas mixture is 50:1. Why is this engine burning so much gas? It starts and idles fine and there is no knocking in the engine. What can the problem be? Can you suggest anyway to stop the engine from consuming so much gas? Thanks!

Sounds like you have a hole in the diaphram of the fuel pump. The gas passes thru the hole and eventually passes out the exhaust. Notice any extra fuel in the water behind your boat?

I would order up a fuel pump rebuild kit ($15) and install.

Your engine should use about 8 gallons per hour, at full throttle. About 4-5 gallons per hour at 3700 rpm.

Yes I agree...do some sniffing around and find out if there is raw fuel exiting the engine somewhere.

TMD

Umm, what does the bottom of your boat look like?
