I came across an Evinrude 85hp with electric shift, and didn't know where to look for the serial # on it. It looks like an older motor. I was wondering how many years they made an 85hp with push button shifting, and where to look for the serial #. The guy that has it said he would take $300 for it or $400 for it the boat and trailer. I currently am using a '73 115 Merc that is hard to start in the cold, and was wondering if the Evinrude would work better for me.

Thanks for any info. :)

Look for the model number - it should be on a plate on the transom bracket. Once you get that, post it here and we can identify the motor for you.

i can chase electric shift 85hp 68-72. the solenoids for the lower unit are not longer available, other lower unit parts expensive. i honestly would pass if you are looking for something dependable.

the 73 115 merc is noted to be cold natured, the way i use to start mine, is, pump bulb, till hard, fast idle all the way up, full choke, turn over 4-5 times. then pump bulb till really hard, i would put my knee on bulb. then idle full up, choke, and start. you have to almost flood them to start them. then bump choke to keep it running, till it settles down.

Re: 85hp electric shift

The 1968 model is an electric shift model, in 1969 thru 1972 they were hydroelectric shifts. The 68 model has a small pointy gearcase with an exhaust snout. The 69 and later models have the thru hub exhaust. Totally different shifting systems. Even the push button switches were different.

I've owned both merc and OMC of that era. I think the Mercs were a better product.
