85hp evinrude missing

Ihave a 1972 Evinrude Starflite 85hp. First time out this summer it would not start, just cranked and would absolutely NOT fire. My father (loaned him the boat) took the flywheel off and it was rusty underneath so he cleaned it up with some fine sand paper. He also removed the points and 'lightly' brushed them. Now the motor would run, but cut out up to about 2/3 throttle, then it would just take off like nothing is wrong. I believe this is a electrical problem, but will entertain any guess's that are put forth. Does the magneto need to be cleaned also? Or maybe the flywheel again? Does anyone know the gap for the points? I appreciate any help I can get.

Set the points to .010 .

I had the same motor for a number of years. I had a similar problem and discovered that one of the wires going to the points was rubbing on the timing advance plate causing it to stick.<br /><br />Another frustrating event was after a winter storage I could get no spark. After replacing some expensive parts it turned out to be the antireverse spring was grounding the points out.<br /><br />Good Luck.
