85hp Evinrude, Water pump-replace or keep?

I was told I should replace my water pump while doing a tune-up. The former owner cannot remember the last tune-up and suspects it was up to 10yrs ago (or more). Five years ago at the earliest.

I know I should replace the water pump but I'm wondering, just how dangerous is it to leave the one I have since it's working? The motor is strong and in great shape for a 31yr old motor. Its a 1979 Evinrude 85hp V4 outboard.

Does $170 sound like a good price for replacement?

that's a total drive out price? Parts and labor? if so I'd say it's fair. It's kind of bear to get the inpeller off of the shaft.

Water pump service. Yes, Yes, Yes. The rubber can give out any time with age so it is a good routine maintenance every 2 seasons.
Easy enough to do yourself if you are so inclined.

Yes, that's without tax but the price I was given.

I'm getting a tune-up, engine de-carb, new power tilt/trim seal replacement, and probably the water pump replacement for about $450. Great mechanic with unbelievable reputation.

Just wanted a second opinion. :D

I saw your thread after I posted. I may do that next time. After I've learned a bit more about marine mechanics. :D

I replaced the water pump. Glad I did too. The mechanic said that particular motor can be a pain due to aligning the shifting thingy and something else. He also said the water pump was going bad.

Thanks for the help and the answers. Looks like I made the right choice to not wait a few more months till the funds were there.

Yeah I was going to say that the job is just enough of a pain to make it well worth the $170 to have someone else do it and I'm not even particularly well off :)

I'd add that if it truely has been 10 years it might be wise to let a pro do it. That is a long time and some sort of corrosion may have set in. Makes it a real tough job when you haven't done one before.
