85hp force outboard spitting water but smoking

I have had this boat for a few years and am restoring it. My wife being the smart one in the family suggested that I run the motor before getting to far into the project. I went out today to see if it would start. I didn't use the boat at all during these summer months so it has sat quite a long time. It took some finessing but I did manage to get it running. My question/problem is that it smokes out of the water ejection ports after I turn it off. While it was running I could see water spitting out of the ports so I am assuming that the water pump is doing it's job. Why would it smoke out of these ports and how much water is supposed to come out when it's running? Thank-you for any and all advice.

Water should sorta "spit" or "spray" out of the ports. They don't "pee" like other outboards. The smoke is normal also, as it is just the oil burning that was mixed in the fuel.

geeco1, Thank you for the response. The smoke should come from the water outlet port?? And it does just sorta spit. Okay so no need for a new pump? or thermostat? They do have a thermostat don't they? My motor knowledge is sub par.

I, by far, am no mechanic and someone will be along shortly to give the technical details. However, those ports are both for water and exhaust. What year is your motor? Mine has an exhaust port just above the prop. As backpressure on that port increases, the excess exhaust will come out of the two holes where the water spits.

I believe that you should have a thermostat. My old boat had a Merc o/b and it had the small "pee" hole that made it easy to verify if the water impeller was working or not. The Force motors do not, they just have the two spit holes and they are hard to see from drivers position. However, look at one of the first threads in the Force forum. It will give you detailed direction on installing a Tell-Tale. It took about 10 minutes to install and gives me good peace of mind that I can see the "pee" stream.

If you are unsure of the condition of your impeller, you should replace it. If this is a new-to-you engine, the impeller could be several years old and on the verge of failure.

The motor looks to be original to the boat and the boat is an 87' so I assume the motor is 87' also.

Just checked it for the screw on top and it has one so i will be installing the tale-tell. Thanks again.
