85hp fuel pump question

[fordworker]

doing fuel pump, 2nd time. first one ripped after couple hours use. any ideas on that?
also, rubber goes toward pump and gasket against plastic base right?

Did the motor backfire? Or cough? It will blow a diaphram if it did.
