Lkbkop.... Shift rod cap? Are you speaking about the cap/cover that is attached to the lower unit with four bolts, over the solenoids? If that's missing, all you'll have is forward. You say you know all about the shift solenoids but just in case, the following explains how that unit operates.

(Hydro Electric Shift)

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Preminum Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).

With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

I saw you have the same motor as I do and mines been sitting for a few years.I've taken a compression test and it has 125-140 psi. on all four.do you have any parts outlets to share or wiring diagram. The power pack is fried on this one and I haven't a clue on this hydro-electric shift, any help or knowledge you can share would be greatly appreciated. Joe - he cant be missing the shift rod cap as there is no shift rod. If he's missing the solenoid top cap, obviously the units full of water.

Do you think he's missing the plastic "cap" between the two solenoids?

Dhadley.... My thoughts exactly (No shift cap = unit full of water), but I couldn't visualize anything else from that description. I'm quite curious as to exactly what is missing as I haven't a clue.

Re: 85hp johnson shift rod cap

i have a seloc repair manual for this 85hp johnson and it mentions the shift rod cap in 2 places and here is what is reads...."Check to make sure that the cap on the bottom of the shift rod casing is in place."....and then again in another part it says...."continue lowering the solenoid until the cap on the end of the shift rod casing seats on top of the valve lever and check ball assemble."....maybe the book is wrong but it has helped me thru everything else and it shows a blow up of my lower unit and it shows something on the botton of the shift rod casing that i dont have.

Re: 85hp johnson shift rod cap

OK. Thats a small square deal on the bottom end of the shift rod. If its not there the unit will not shift. It should be in forward all the time.

The part number for the cap is 315484.

Is anything else missing compared to the manual?

Dont ya just love a good puzzle?
