A little while ago I asked about adjusting the idle on my old 976 85hp johnson and was told that it would be done by adjusting the timing? I bought a manual for it, but it is not clear as to how or where to adjust, does someone have pics or a video or something? I am gonna go splash this weekend and would like to do it while the boat is in the water on the trailer.

Are you trying to adjust idle speed.....or idle mixture?

Leave the timing alone!

If the engine idles okay but just too low or too high, adjust it at the threaded trunion where the throttle cable clamps in at the engine. Loosen the clamp retaining bolt, then screw the plastic trunion one way or the other to increase/decrease the rpm.

If you have a different idle problem.... what is it?

Im not really sure, whichever one controls how high it idles while in gear...basically the motor has been gone through and idles fine while in a bucket, but out in the water it does not like to be at a very low speed, so I wanted to raise up the low speed rpm a bit.
And yes the carbs have been rebuilt, all lines are new compression good etc.

Okay, you simply want to increase the rpms..... adjust as I mentioned in my previous post.

On a flushette, the normal idle rpm setting is 1000 rpm for a 20" shaft engine, and 1200 rpm for a 25" shaft engine. The idle will drop to normal when in the water.

Ok great so adjusting the trunion will allow it to idle super low without dying in the water? Because i like how slow the throttle goes I just don't like how in the water it will eventually die at super low throttle. Kind of like it needs more gas or something?

Super low idle? Not likely on a high hp engine. Set it to the rpm I mentioned above and that'll be as good as it gets.... depending on the actual condition of the engine of course.
