Re: 85hp power pack

I was searching these forums about power packs and I think people were saying that a rectifier (which converts the AC current from the flywheel/ststor to DC current for the alternator and ignition), could be faulty causing the power pack to fail prematurely. Rectifiers are pretty cheap. Someone please check my findings.

Rectifiers can effect the running of an engine but I don't think it would cause a powerpack to loose all its smoke. Check grounds.

c/6

Hooty

Re: 85hp power pack

the onley thing a rectofier does is change the curent frome ac to dc you have probabley burnt the stator up and rectofier. a long time evinrude mechanic said the rectifier had nothing to do with the runing of the motor . the rectifier is around 40 bucks at napa for my 70 hp 1974. ordered one today .

Re: 85hp power pack

I think the power pack consists of capacitors epoxied into a housing. on my 85HP V4, it's located between the V on top of the block. If you saw smoke and stuff coming out of it, it probably needs to be replaced as well. check ebay for used or seilermarine.com has good prices on after market ignition replacements with limited warranties.
