85hp Yamaha tilt problem

today my tilt motor would not tilt up, it would tilt down and when i tried to tilt it up something just clicked under the engine cover. i removed the cover and it looked like a relay that was making the noise. i desided to go back and load it on the trailer and on the way back while i was running i tried it and it started working. any suggestions on what to look for ?

I had this a while back and I had to replace the entire tilt motor. If you research on this forum you will find a lot of advice on how to troubleshoot this.

One thing to try is to follow the wires to the relay or where they connect on the motor, unhook them and then connect them directly to a battery and see if it is in the relay or connection, if you have no power then it is probably a bad motor. The oem motor is like over $400, I purchased a knock off from something like tungsten marine and it is working fine $120.

I replaced the whole unit and added ney trim fluid myself and saved a lot of dough. I'm a novice and would not have been able to do this without the advice on this forum so keep on researching and you'll figure it out with some time and patience.
