'85ish Evinrude 90hp Questions

I've got a few questions. First off, the motor is on an '85ish Sylvan (can never remember the exact year of the boat or motor) Super Sportster. Great little setup for the wife and I. I'm the 3rd owner.

First question: After getting good and warm, the dang boat has idling issues. Typically, I can get it to idle, but it will almost never go into gear without killing the engine. Other times, it won't idle at all. I've had the boat 3 years, but these have included buying to foreclosed houses, so we've only taken it out about 6 times. Can someone give me ideas on where to start checking things, or what to do?

Second Question: I had the boat serviced before I ever put it in the water myself. I told the marina to check everything out and make sure it was good to go. I'm trying to remember, but I think they put a new impeller in it, but they didn't say anything about the lower unit leaking. I went a year w/o every thinking about it, since they had just serviced it. Before taking it out at the start of the second year, I changed the fluid in the lower unit, and it had just a tad bit of water in it. I've gotten to where I check it before every trip, and it typically has at least a tablespoon of water, and possibly as much as 1/4 cup of water in it. Is this probably condensation or it is leaking? Is this little water an issue, or will they all get a little bit in them? I don't want to be careless, but it is kind of a pain to have to check it every time I want to take the boat out. Especially now that we're hoping to take it out more.

Third Question: I'm including a few pictures that show some leaking grease. The grease zerk is on the opposite side and appears to fill the area the motor pivots around while turning. Is there anything special about the grease I should be using and is it common to leak this much? I'm guessing it is common, but again, want to cover my bases.

Fourth Question: When the boat was serviced after I bought it, they said they fixed the tilt/trim, however I found a plug today, that isn't connected to anything. I'm including pics of what I think are the male and female ends of it. The female is connected to a small black box that resides under the seat, where the battery is.

Final Question: My prop is slightly beat up, but I don't know what is TOO beat up, and needing replaced. I've read a ton of threads on how to size props, etc. but haven't noticed anything on how beat up is too much. I also can't recall if the tach works, so I currently don't know how to check to see if this prop is doing what it should. I'm trying to remember from last year, but it seems like the boat runs 33-35 mph, but that the tach wasn't working. I'll check it out when I take the boat out in the next day or two, but wanted to ask these questions before I did.

I'm throwing in some other pictures, because I know how everyone like pictures. Thanks for any help, and happy boating!

A lower unit that is in good condition is sealed and no such thing as condensation getting in.----Therefor you need a seal kit.---These motors have a history of broken piston rings.--Start with a compression test first and foremost.

You've certainly got a raft of questions. This is a good forum for answers. I'll start it off and others will chime in. Two things about idle. It has to idle high enough so that it won't die when going in to gear. Should idle at 650-700 when floating in the lake and in forward gear. (you need your tach working....) When idling, an occasional sneeze, or cough may contribute to rough idling. If this is an issue, the carbs may need cleaning, as it's running lean at idle. (not a spark problem.) Water in the gear oil is/can be a serious problem if you continue to run it. The lower should not have any water in it at all. (make sure the two plugs in the lower unit are tight and have good seals around the plugs first.) You need to get it to a shop to have the lower unit gearcase tested and perhaps resealed. Too much water means too little lube and that can make for a very expensive repair. A gearcase reseal is a much cheaper option. Your pictures did not come out. You may be trying to grease the swivel bracket. When lubbed, grease does come out at the bottom and top. You need a low temperature waterproof (marine) grease for that application. Normal automotive grease is not waterproof. Are the wire leads for the trim gauge on the dash?-hard to tell without pictures. A beat-up prop needs to be repaired or replaced. Usually you can get an aluminum one repaired in a week for under $ 90. A damaged prop will not perform well, (speeds will be slower) and you will burn more fuel. If one of the blades is bent, the uneven distribution of hydraulic forces will eventually (long-term) affect the outer propshaft bearing. Again, fixing the prop is probably cheaper that eventual internal gearcase mechanic work.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try attaching the pictures again. I'll definitely get the boat into a shop soon for a lower unit seal. The idle being a little too low sounds very likely. I once knew where to adjust that, so I'll have to look it up again. I'll make sure to check the tach as soon as I get it on the water. I bet the unconnected male/female plugs are for the tilt/trim gauge. That would make perfect sense. I don't think my prop is too bad off, but let's see what your thoughts are. I've been holding out on replacing it till I knew what I should replace it with.

I still can't get my pictures to load properly. They are in the Media section of my profile. I don't know if it is easy/possible for others to see them from there.

So I've continued trying to get the boat ready to hit the water. Today I got new bunks made for the trailer, since the old ones floated away and had to be rescued and ratchet strapped on at the end of our last trip. While getting ready to check the lower unit fluid, I noticed that it appears to be leaking from the propeller shaft/seal area. Could this be the source of my water in the lower unit? Is this something I can change vs. needing to get a marina to fix a lower unit seal. I'm pretty handy and work on all of my other vehicles (cars, trucks, four wheelers, UTV, and motorcycles.) I'm going to try and find a manual on this motor now, but any help you guys could provide would be excellent.

Can get the dang pics to work easily from Google Drive, so heck w/ it. If you really need a photo, let me know and I'll make it work.

Thanks again!
