1985 Merc 25XD s/n A162934.

Dropped a cylinder last fall. Chrome bore is beyond repair.
Replaced block/pistons with a USED short block (block, crank, pistons, reeds).
Motor starts & runs. Won’t idle down. She dies before I can get her into gear. Timing is suspect at idle thru wot.

Clymer manual is not terribly clear on timing/carb sync but I think I can follow it ok.

I am hoping to get her going then take her to the lake & beach her (20’ toon boat) to set wot timing (don’t have access to a test prop). 55 gal drum is a bit small for running motor at wot.

Can I set low speed/idle timing and idle rpm with carb before setting wot timing or does setting wot timing throw thelow speed settings off.

Is there a procedure for statically timing this motor or does she have to be running?

Any other pointers/thoughts/suggestions appreciated

I think perhaps you might be able to take the plug wires and connect them to a set of plugs properly grounded outside of the motor block and time in full throttle, in gear, at starter motor RPM.

thanx. willing to "give-it-a-go" but need additional info. starter won't engage when in gear AND can't open throttle to w/o when in neutral. can you advise methode to "hot-wire" or bypass the safety? Or can i just push timing linkage forward to simulate wot.

sidebar: i was born in Elk Grove, Illinois. coincidence,....or the OTHER THING!
