86 150 johnson trim tilt won't hold

86 150 johnson trim tilt won't hold,comes down on trim and tilt jacks,i have removed the unit. don't know what to do next several plugs and screw with snap ring.will any of these things possible help to remove or should i start at pump motor.thanks newberry

Hiya' newberry..welcome to the forum.<br /><br />First things first, do ya' got a manual? If not, I highly suggest you getting one. Tilt and trim units are full of little balls and springs and if you don't know how to take one apart, chances are good springs and balls will be flying across the workbench. I suggest an OEM manual for your engine because they have specific chapters just for trim and tilts.<br /><br />Did you notice if there was any oil leaking around the cylinders? Was your fluid level up to the bottom of the fill hole? To try and tell you how to take the thing apart would take more posting than I care to do. LOL....Get the manual and follow the procedure for troubleshooting. Good Luck.

Hello newberry, Check your Manual Release Valve make sure it is tight. Your release valve has 3 O-rings on it and they might be damaged, this would cause your motor to drop. Good Luck

thank you both for reply no leaks and oil level good,i really appreciate the info i may have to get a manual,as i have some other problems too.purchased this boat and motor hope to get repaired. thanks newberry
