I have an older evinrude. The engine runs good and have had it checked out compression wise. I have 4 cylinders around 100psi 1 @ 90 psi and the other @ 85 psi. Question life expectancy? Best way to repair once engine does stop running. I have had the cylinder tops off and seen the minor grooves in the 2 cylinder walls. Basically the wrist pins from the cylinder and the rods looked like what caused the grooves. Thanks Keith

Keith.... If the scoring is about 3/4" wide and at the bottom of the cylinder walls, that would be caused by failure of the wrist pin retainers which would allow the wrist pins to drop down to damage the cylinders.

If the scoring is elsewhere, you have a engine running lean on the fuel/oil mixture due to fouled/clogged carburetors (a faulty VRO would damage all of the cylinders).

Bottom line is that the powerhead is failing. The damage will only get worse as you run the engine. If you intend to overhaul the powerhead, I suggest you do it now rather than later to avoid additional cost.

If you intend to replace the powerhead with a factory replacement powerhead, you're looking at approximately $3540 or so, possibly more (anyone got the latest prices?). I have one left in stock that I have personally rebuilt to factory specs that I'd sell for $2370 should you decide to go that route but unfortunately you would have to travel here to pick it up.

Whatever route you decide to take, I wish you luck.
