Hi all -

New member. I bought a Rinker with the above motor and should have checked the upper gear box oil. The guy before me said he filled it but did so like a Merc so no oil made it to the upper gear box. I thought the motor had seized and pulled it but after futher inspection found out a bearing in the upper gear box had siezed.

Bought new gear and bearing set and have seated all bearing races. Now according to the manual I need a special tool to identify the number of shims required. I am lost at this point, do I take it to someone to set it up or just use the shims already in place.

I live in LaCrosse WI and have not gotten a good feeling from the local shops.

Also does anyone know where to get just the oil pan gasket for same motor.

Thanks in advance.

You need to get new gears reshimmed. You also need to check the lower unit. Oil (and metal shavings) from the upper goes into the lower. Never seen an upper self-distruct without damaging the lower as well.

Could he have had just enough oil to keep the gears happy and the upper bearing ran dry seized which saved the rest from total destruction, like once I had a motor seize up tight due to 1 rod bearing, I replaced the bearing down and dirty and ran the car till the tires wore out.
I think it is possible that lower may have not sustained any damage from shrapnal being his bearing seized and didn't break apart.

You've gone this far, you might as well tear down the l.u. as well.
