86 40 HP How do I re-attach my lower unit?

Earlier this year I blew my lower unit. After searching for a while I finally found one. The guy I bought it from re-sealed it for me, but we couldn't get our schedules to match up so he couldn't install it for me. Now, I get to do it. Is it as simple as just bolting it on, and I'm finished? I got it to bolt on the other day by moving the hub on the top of the motor, but do I have to do anything to get the shift rod to work/engage? I'm really in the dark here, but I am mechanically inclined, so if anyone can just explain how it goes on, that would be great.

It's a 1986 Johnson 40HP VRO.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry your probably looking for a quick answer. You need to invest in a oem factory manual and it will give you step by step instructions. Basiclly the shift rod is conncted by a bolt/pin through the shift linkage infront of the power head if Im not mistaken. Hard to remember. be helpfull if I had a pic of your shift mechanism to remember exactly how it connects good luck

The smart ***** in me wants to say "The reverse order that it was removed" Sorry.

I don't know if it's the same as my '87 or not, but mine -disconnect the shift rod at the power head, mark the trim tab (so it can be reolaced in the same position that it was removed) Take out the bolt under the trim tab and remove the 4 remaining bolts.
