Hi all, a few months ago i picked up a little basstracker with an 86 or 85 40hp evinrude. Im rather motor inclined and rebuilt the carbs, replaced the water pump, plugs and a cleaning. replaced all the motor end fuel lines and snap rings. the main from tank is pretty decent so i didn't replace, yet, if problem persists i may.

The vro is disconnected. i premix at 50/1. When idling for about 4-5 minutes the warning horn goes off. tell tail pissing the whole time. i get on the throttle and no hesitation. about 2 min of moving at 1/2 throttle & higher the horn goes off. i go back to idling. maybe 4 mins, maybe 7 minutes and the horn sounds again. I get on the throttle again and in a min or 2 it shuts off.

also, My primer bulb never vacuums, no leaks, and my primer bulb hardens like it should when primed.

The tell tale primes in less then 20 seconds when running.

Also, what is the best way to clean the cooling system if it should be blocked or half blocked?? also I did have to free the tip of the tell tail, it may have been sand.

thanks in advance.

Sounds like a sticky thermostat to me.When on higher rpms the pressure relief valve opens and supplies water flow.At low rpms you are relying on flow through the t/stat assy.

Agree with ob, the tell tale, is common to get clogged. critters love to make a home in them.

thanks for the replies, i pulled the head cover off to get to the thermostat, it was in pretty rough shape to say the least. ordered a new one and a head cover gasket & well see how it goes. the pressure relief looks like it may be tricky to get it to stay in place for reassembly.

thank you guys...
