i have a 50 hp force, 1986. its got coils and points. i finally got the flywheel off, i had to buy a hydrylic puller, and modify it. at first attempt, i pulled the gear teeth from the flywheel. i then had a buddy modify the jaws (welded some tabs on the jaws) and finally got the darn thing off. it took alot of beating and pb buster.
i lost spark in number one, and it turned out to be a broken lead wire to the points.
the manual i bought was for the 87 up motors. so i dont have the point setting. what is the the point setting?? i set them at .20
i have a parts motor, 79 45 hp. i pulled the stator and flywheel off that motor and installed it on the 86 50. will this work ok? the motor starts ok, but i still have a coil issue.
has anyone tried using a coil from a dci/ 1987 or later on this points/coil motor? i guess im asking if i can safetly use the later year coils instead of the older styler coil. i dont care if it looks odd, i can fabricate a bracket if need be.
on a good note, i changed the rectifier and installed a cheapie ebay regulator. i will post pictures and results as soon as i get this baby in the water.
thanks

Re: 86 50 hp point gap, and stator questions

Point gap is .020. There should be two lines on the flywheel 180 degrees apart for checking timing of each set of points.

Next time, remove the three bolts holding the rope plate to the flywheel and use those holes to pull it with (3) 1/4 X 20 bolts and a steering wheel puller or a harmonic balancer puller. You tighten down the center bolt and give it a whack with a heavy hammer. Flywheel usually pops right off.

Torque flywheel nut to 85-95 foot pounds or the wheel will spin on the crankshaft and shear the key.
