didn't want to hijack someone else's thread, does my motor have a t-stat? there isn't one listed on the online parts manual. the seloc manual lists one for the updated powerhead and not for the early design but I don't know which I have. I don't have any extra cover that look like a t-stat housing but right behind the linkage on the lh side there are two raised round areas cast into the exhaust cover one is about 2 inch and the other is 3/4" one right above the other.

Okaye. So that's where they put it on that engine. The smaller dia is the tstat and the larger the popoff valve that opens somewhere around 2500 rpm's when the water pressure gets high enough to dislodge it. It provides extra cooling volume at the higher engine speeds. Most of the tstat pellets are stamped 143F that I know of and that is the opening temp...hotter it gets the wider it opens.

thats kinda what I figured, it flows good water at all times at the telltale and doesn't run hot, my only other issue then is that mercury parts micro fiche by serial number doesnt list a t'stat they illustrate that cover with the embossements in it but no other parts there, this motor had alot of idiots fiddling with it over the years and I had to put alot of things back together correctly to get it up and running again. if I can find the parts I would like to just go ahead and replace them if I can, cheap insurance. but if theres nothing there I don't want to open up a new can of worms for nothing.
