test rode the bayliner today, and it ran great. smooth at idle, and good power. question the motor died late in the day (steped on the fuel hose) and it seemed the battery drained. how can u tell if the alternater is producing electricity? or is the force different, and doesnt do this recharge the battery?

Re: 86 50hp bad battery?

help!!
the battery was only 12 volts, started out at 13 volts, then it dropped. when i disconnect the battery the engine dies.
i see the purple wire is for the generator (?) and the only wires connected to the battery, are the main + - to motor and black and red to the switch. i bought the boat used, and it looks like the harness goes to the switch.
i know i should get a manual, but cant locate a oem. seems like the only ones around are the clymer:(:(

Get the clymer. A lot of times the purple wire is for a tach and is not always used . Chances are the rectifier is shot. Mercury still sells them but they are 40 bucks. Part number is FK650450. The manual should show how to test it with a DVM but I would be 90 percent certain that is the part that is defective. If you search the forum you will find a way to use a Radio Shack rectifier and it only costs less then 10 bucks.

They both do the same thing but a regulator will maintain about 14v were a rectifier will allow the voltage go up to as high" personal experience" 17v. Your motor should have a rectifier. Look on top of the Force thread column and there is a tread that goes in great detail on the subject.

puddlejumper,
is it better to replace the rectifier with a regulator? does radio shack have a universal regulator? i am handy, and can tackle the rectifier swap, but any knowledge of a reg installed vs rect?

Rectifier changes AC current created by the stator too DC current so that it can charge you battery and the regulator is to regulate the voltage between 13~16 volts.

The high voltage thread is a good one at the top of the force forums. It will answer all of your question.
I still have the rectifier on my engine but strongly thinking of installing a regulator. I just don't like it when the gauge reads 17+ volts. I don't think Radio shack has what you need but I think if you use one from a snow mobile it will.
