Hello All. I have an '86 Mercury outboard (serial # B266179) that I am just now starting to have some problems with. I was out crabbing the other day and the motor ran GREAT until I was coming back to the launch. All of a sudden it starting "shaking" terribly and was basically shaking the entire boat. Since I only had a few 100yds back to the launch, I dogged it in thinking that was the best thing. I cannot remember (this was last week) if I had any problems with reverse, but today I took off the prop to see if anything was in there, checked the lower unit oil and topped off, and took the cover off just to inspect. I then (motor not started, or even in water) went to switch the tiller from neutral into forward, everything normal, but then when going into reverse there was a lot of resistance and then a SNAP! Looked to find a small plastic part (on the opposite side of tiller) that snapped. Now my tiller handle will go freely from full forward to full reverse with no stopping at neutral. The pull start will also pull freely no matter what "position" the handle is in. It, like any pull start, should not pull in forward or reverse, so I am thinking this part has something to do with gear changes...?

My question to you, after reading the above, do you all have any idea what the reason for the terrible shaking could have been? and also, what is this part (pictures attached, hopefully) and can this be repaired. I am hoping to get this fixed and get this boat sold! I am going to be purchasing a carolina skiff 198DLX as an upgrade to my 16' Crabby Jon that I have now!

Thanks in advance for any and all help that may come!!!

Here is on more picture, to hopefully help with the actual placement of the broken part. It is at the very bottom in the picture.

*EDIT- Ok, so I just ran her down to the boat launch, backed her in, and this part is definetely something that has to do with switching between F, N, and R. The motor started fine (first pull) and idles like normal, but when going into the position of forward or reverse on the handle, it only acts as if you are pulling the throttle cable (by hand) when in neutral. The prop is not spinning (or spinning enough to actually move the boat. I couldn't tell in N if the motor was still shaking (maybe it just had some dirt in the prop), but it started and idle'd like a champ! Now if I could just get it to move bahahaha...

This forum moves fast, although I can't seem to get a reply here. Can anyone AT LEAST identify the part?
