86 90HP Merc stalls out at end of trip

[Fortech]

Whenever I head in to the pier from a day out on the water, the engine stalls out and is hard to restart. it has a new fuel pump, wires, plugs, and has pretty much been gone over by 2 mechanics. The primer bulb goes soft, which is not the case when i'm out there running out on the water. Where do I start to look for the problem?<br />Thanks

do you mean the primer bulb collaspes or just gets really soft

try putting in a new fuel line primer bulb-$12- the one's from Mercury with the yellow stripe are best. occ. the valve in the primer bulb goes bad, especially with the Tempo brand ones according to what others have said. Also check for any air leaks in the fuel line.

It could be getting cold trolling too... if it stalls like that try doing a "cold" type restart.<br /><br />-W

I have a 67 Mercruiser 80, bought used.It ran for 5 minutes the day I bought it The timing and compression are good. Previous owner installed an electric fuel pump. I just had carburetor rebuilt<br />because of stalling. Motor still stalls at any attempt to slow the idle enough to shift after <br />running about 4-5 minutes. I've only run it with flushing water since I've had it only 3 months. No local mechanic will touch it because of it's age. I may be stuck with a yard ornament here.<br />What might be the problem? If no Renault parts are available, can this unit be replaced with anything else? I'm getting frustrated .

Tony, did you ever get the problem fixed? I have same motor (1988) & it sometimes does the same thing.

I was told that the coil might be shorting or<br />opening when hot. Check for spark when it is hot.<br />No spark indicates bad coil.Those intermittent things are hard to spot.
