I have a 86 Jason bass boat that the sun and wind has killed the clear gelcoat on sections of boat.

I tried to remove hardware in sections to wet sand. Thinking it was just the clear oxidized. But to find out while sanding it was color that was going.

There was some of the original gelcoat and paint under a cleat that was next to a bad area. So i thought i could sand the oxidized clear next to the area under cleat to see the color come back. Well the color never came back. I just made the area under cleat match the bad area. But on the up side the area is now smooth.

I found this in the forum

https://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...ke-wet-sanding

and

https://forums.iboats.com/forum/boa...storing-badly-oxidized-bass-boat-flake-finish

And I'm thinking about roughing up the top of the boat and applying paint, some clear gelcoat w/ flake, then clear gelcoat. Basically following the direction given by ZOOL in the 2nd link above.

The question I have is on the uscomposite site they list the clear gelcoat for $54.50 a gal. and a clear polyester casting resin for $38 a gal. Planed on getting 5 gal and there is a $80ish dollar difference. Trying to get away with cheapest option and still an acceptable finish. Doesn't have to be perfect just something better than I have now? Or just sand smooth and polish. I couldn't add pics from my phone so I need to get pics on computer then i should be able to attach.

Any thoughts?
