I didn't mount one specifically out of concern about that exact same reason...I'm sure it can be done with cross bracing, but its just so thin back there...I didn't want to risk it.

I do believe you will be OK. I have drilled holes in the splashwell and the top flat surface of the cap. Both have 1/2" plywood reinforcement in them. In my 1600, I can stand on the edge of the splashwell and its solid as a rock.

Here is a photo of a 3" hole cut in the splashwell when the permanent fuel tank went in. The 1/2" ply is visible. If you splashwell is like this one, it is super solid.

Huh...Mine isn't anywhere near that thick, and I have stress cracks in mine letting me know how thin it is!

(But, I haven't drilled through mine either!)

It seems that Bayliner changed build methods on some models a lot from year to year. So it really depends on your specific boat where the "hard spots" are for mounting things.

i dunno about 1/2 plywood but if ya look under the well in the front of it there are 2 bolt and a steel plate about 4 x 6 inches and the other two hard points are located on each side of the engineabout 2' away from the motor.... i was thinking of adding cables for extra stregth but i dunno
