Can I safely substitute the lower crank bearing for a standard ball-bearing from a bearing supply house? The only obvious difference is the ball carriage is plastic from OMC and the substitute is steel. . .
Thanx

Sounds like an upgrade to me. I have had to make the leap of faith on several occasions, and the drive to Fort Myers Bearing & Seal for aftermarket seals and bearings (mostly on cars and motorcycles, but one lower unit). So far, no complaints. But do mic it every whichway to be sure.

The dimensions are identical. The original bearing had rust on the balls and races(poor storage from prev. owner) I wonder if OMC purposely uses plastic to reduce the chance of sliding binding balls in the event of a little rust. Or am I just a little paranoid?

Binding balls is something OMC recently became aquainted with.I would make every effort to stick with OEM bearings or an after market manufacturer that markets for this application. They then must stand behind the product if it is the cause of a failure.

You have an OMC engine......use their parts. Trying to save a buck or two will cost you later on. Believe me I've been there...

OMC didnt make the bearing, but some bearings were made for OMC only, and the only source is dealer. If you take the bearing to a good bearing house, they can get the exact bearing or tell you if bearing is dealer item.

I have a OMC V4. The crank bearing was bad.
So I replaced it with a, believe it or not,
bearing off a mercury crank. They both use
Timken bearings but in different wrappers
