I have a 1986 Bayliner Trophy CC with a 125hp Force on it, the white, Chrysler one. How do I put the motor up to tow it, is there a release of some kind to manually raise it? The trim motor runs, but the motor doesn't move. Any help would be appreciated.

View attachment oilcan.bmpTher MIGHT be a release on that pump but I wouldn't mess with it.
Your only gonna make more work and possibly ruin it??
You check for fluid in the unit?
Remove the plug and add some oil.
I use an old style oil can.

If the pump has a slotted shaft in the front, it can be turned to release. However, I don't think your engine has a release type power trim pump. As Jerry said, check the hydraulic fluid level and fill if needed. If this doesn't help, then you have bad seals inside the cylinders or pump. You can try running the pump while someone else lifts the engine leg. OR: You can disconnect the two lines going to the tilt cylinder and manually lift the engine---but this will get fluid all over the place unless you put a couple of lengths of tubing over the lines and into a jar.

If you have screw-in valves in the pump, you can remove the front valve, but again, it is messy with fluig draining all over.

Thanks guys. Reason I am replacing the engine is 2 fold, 1; it has a ticking in the engine above about 3000 rpm, and secondly the power trim being inoperable. I have found 3 possible replacements, a 115 Mercury tower of power, a 115 Suzuki, and a 110 V4 Johnson, they are all in excellent condition, and i'm kinda leaning towards the Suzuki, tho I will admit i've always really like the 6cyl inline Merc. They are all in the relative same year range, late 80's to early 90's. The Suzuki is the most expensive and the Merc the cheapest.

OH! You have a thread in general boating--read what I wrote there about the noise.

I did, and thank you very much for your input. I'll be looking it over a lot better next week when I get her out of the water and back on the trailer.

Re: '86 Force 125 trim won't go up

Ok, pulled the boat out of the water today and back on the trialer it went. Now it's in my driveway. I checked the oil in the trim unit and it was very low, so I topped it off, ran it then added more a couple times. It went up about 1/2 way or a little more, but it was easy with my daughter keeping power to it and me lifting it by hand. I imagine it needs bleeding. I had a diver come and completely clean the bottom yesterday as there was some growth on it. Took it out and ran it this morning before putting it back on the trailer, it was much better, but it still seems lacking in power. It runs 28mph on the GPS. It idles and runs smooth and all, just lacks power. I'm going to do a compression test next week, plus it still has the ticking in the engine, not terribly loud, but I can hear it, and that's not acceptable to me. Still gonna put one of the other motors on it, I just wanted to see what shape this is in so I can try and gt a few bucks on it to recoup a little of my motor investment. It was fairly rough out today, and I was very happy with the way the boat takes it. It rides very well for a small boat. Anywa, that's where I stand at the moment. Still trying to decide on the 3 motors I have available to me at the moment, 115 Merc 6cyl inline, Suzuki 115, and a Johnson 110, anyone have any positive or negative things to say about any of these motors? All are in good condition and low hours, all are early 90's. Thanks fo any input.

If the Force was in good shape, then I'd choose it instead of any others. Yours is a Chrysler, not a Mercury. That means it is a reliable engine that will not self-destruct. I'm a DIY mechanic and the Chrysler-Force-USMarine is the best DIY engine ever made. I might consider some mods - like solid sate ignition or Boyensen reed valves but I would certainly want the chrysler first. They are just so fast and easy to keep in top running order.

My second choice would be the Johnny. OMC has a reputation for dependable engines combined with a parts department that stocks parts for 30 years or more.

Mercury tends to discontinue parts after 10years. This would not be a problem if they used industrial standard components like chrysler but Mercs prefer to use proprietary parts and lock in maintenance sales. On a 20 year old Merc you're probably going to run into a critical part that is no longer available.

Suzuki. No way. Being a DIY type I don't like red-headed step children. I want an engine with parts sold at NAPA for automotive prices and every Joe behind the counter has worked on them before.

Chrysler would still be my first choice. Best DIY engine ever and the price is dirt cheap because of what mercury did to them in the 1990's.
