Hi all, Knowing nothing about boats I went and bought an 86 Bayliner w/ an 86 Force 125 on it. During show and tell, the seller fired it up for me. It smoked a bit but being a 2 stroke I figured that was acceptable. Now empty your mouths of anything that will foul the moniter screen or keyboard. The peeholes? weren't peeing. Asked why, he told me it was aircooled and sure enough there was warm air coming out. I bought the whole thing! Now after lurking and soaking in the info here I need advise. The motor idled approx 10 mins in this condition. I have the manual on order, but till it gets here, what should/can I do to see if it has been damaged beyond use? The boat, motor, and trailer cost $1,000 so I'm not hurt too bad unless I have to replace the big buck motor.

Welcome to the forum Foodfisher.
It looks like you have some work to do to figure this out. However there are some very knowledgable people here to get you rolling.
First, how mechanically inclined are you and how are you fixed for tools? You are going to have to have some aptitude to own and maintain this motor so give it some thought.
Next, you are going to need a Force/Chrysler manual before you start anything.;)
You need to find out the condition of your motor before you go putting a lot of effort and money into it so I recommend you start with a compression test and then post the results here.
If they are positive then you should move on to install a new impeller. For that do a search here and you will find some excellent, complete threads on how to do this straight forward task...pretty easy stuff and it sounds like its very needed in your case.
Anyhow, good luck and welcome.

LOL air cooled. Change the impeller before you run that motor again. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=231685 this is the sticky in the force forum it will tell you exactly how to change the impeller. Ditto the compression check and the manual. Post back so we can see whats going on.

BP:cool: I'm fairly Mech. adept. Got tools except any "specials" I may need. compression test 1"st up. Will update. Nothing serious till the manual arrives. Thanks

Re: 86 Force 125

Finally got the motor compression tested. Life stuff interrupted. #1 cylinder tested 126, #2&3 tested 145, #4 tested 150. Recheck confirmed results. Plug inspection upon removal showed #1 was brown and dry. The others were black and wet. From what I've gathered here, impeller, thermostat, and decarb are next. #1 cylinder is a concern. Should I address this before going further? If yes, how? Thanks

Re: 86 Force 125

you may wanna try to shoot some seafoam spray on the thru the carbs especially the top one . to decarbonize spray thru each carb while engine is idling turn engine off and spray some more in the carbs also take of the spark plugs and spray some seafoam in the cylinders, install spark plugs, wait a few hours , start engine and run it for a few minutes , you will see black smoke coming out the exhaust for a few minutes, (seafoam is doing the job)after decarbonation is done take the sparkplugs off ,clean all the residue from electrodes. also check that the idle mixture screws are adjusted right especially the top one. all this may bring the compression higher on the top cylinder.

Full force is correct, but just be sure to do impeller first. Do not want you to try and solve a problem while adding one. There is an excellent thread on how to decarb. Just do a search, but again repair impeller before you start and run engine.

Re: 86 Force 125

Not dead, just hibernating till I fixed a weak transom with S/S knees,(didn't have any from the getgo!!) Replaced a leaking alum. tank, and put a new deck down. The old force is chomping at the bit wanting to be let loose. Since last visit, 2 decarbs gave me 154-5#'s on 1-2&3 and 158-9#'s on 4. New water pump pee's well thru the new telltale. Unexpectantly got my face washed looking at the exhaust. Idled well on muffs. Excitedly plunked the boat in the bay and forgot to disconnect the trailer lites. Two bulbs and lesson learned. Carbs set at 1 turn out. No wake zone no prob. Oh yeh, cleaned out the carb. recirc. system and no more fog bank! Started to slowly accelerate and hit a missing/shuttering zone between idle and plane. Fear made me back off the throttle. Went for it and gave it full throttle and the d#$n thing jumped up on plane (I mean instantly) and took off. Now I'm holding on for dear life, trying to listen to the motor, watch the spastic tach., avoid the sailboats lazily taching back and forth in front of me, and wiping the salt spray off my glasses. Yeah Buddy, I'm diggin it. After settling down, serious thoughts started to settle in, don't kill the motor so the throttle stayed where I could accept the sound of RPM's produced. John you were right!13P prop ain't gonna cut it. Tried to adjust carbs but the choppy water wouldn't let me keep the screwdriver in the slot. Timing lite couldn't find any marks so I gave up the fine tune thing and just cruised the bay taking in the sights. Next day discovered the thingamaging that connects throttle tower shaft to the timing screw adjuster watchamacallit is broken. The OEM manual doesn't cover these parts. Would this cause the shutter between idle and plane and a spastic tach? The part connects the throttle tower and and timing adjuster (plastic). How availiable is it or can it be repaired (JB Weld)? At WOT the part seperates along the lengh and skips threads. I think I'm chomping harder the the Mighty Force. Bye Bye Whaletail.

Got it. Put 1/2" between the plastic parts and the timing set itself to 28* btdc. Thanks addict.
