I have a 1986 Force 50 HP that pretty much anything above idle (i can go a little higher but not much) it starts coughing and semms like it's getting worse. It did it once the last time I took it out but then cleared up and was fine the rest of the day, then Friday I took it out and it did this the whole time and seemed to get worse. It doesn't seem to be overheating, fuel filter is clean as a whistle, and it seems to idle pretty well. I think I noticed the idle doing it a little by the end of the day. It's been a very good running motor up until now, and I'm not sure where to look at this point. Has anyone had this happen or know what to do? Thanks.

I would start by taking the carb apart and cleaning and rebuilding it. Needle valve may be sticking not allowing the bowl to fill with gas. It would not hurt to replace the diaphram in the fuel filter at this time as well. Fuel pump kit from NAPA is 18-7806 cost 10 dollars, carb kit is 18-7037 and cost is about 15 bucks. Instructions come with the carb kit and the fuel pump is real simple. Just replace the diaphram and main gasket in the fuel pump.

Cool beans, I didn't know that NAPA had stuff that would work with these. That's nice to know. Thank you, I'll try that.

What Eurolarva said, of course. But in addition, try opening the mixture screw a quarter turn (ONLY), and test before going in to the carb. Eurolarva and I are trying to say the symptom is that of a lean-running condition...The motor sneezes.
Anything that could cause it to get an insuficiant supply of fuel will cause this, from the pickup tube in the gas tank, clogged vent on the gas tank, to the pickup tube in the carb, and everything in between.
Check compression too, because the fuel pump uses compression pulses to operate it. poor compression=poor fuel pump operation=poor fuel delivery.
